Pain Management Clinic

Chronic pain is defined as pain that serves no useful purpose and is detrimental to the patient, affecting their quality of life.

At Eastcott our Specialist Pain Management Clinic is committed to providing bespoke care, supporting patients in getting back to doing what they love. This means looking at all aspects of lifestyle & pain management, not only the painkillers, but also diet and exercise to name a few examples.

Our 60-minute consultations enable our Specialists to fully understand a patient’s pain. Detailed consultation, careful examination and an in-depth owner discussion allows us to take a patient-centred approach and work with owners and their pets to provide effective pain management solutions.

Working collaboratively with our onsite Veterinary Physiotherapy team we ensure each patient receives a rehabilitation plan, which could dramatically improve pain control, build muscle, and promote weight loss.

We also offer joint 90-minute joint physio and pain consultations for patients where mobility and pain require a unique approach.

If further diagnostics would benefit our understanding of the pain, we work together with our Specialist colleagues in Orthopaedics and Neurology to find answers.

Our team of pain Specialists all trained as Anaesthesia Specialists, this training brings experience of using local anaesthetic to block nerves and prevent pain. As well as offering this to our surgical patients, there is also a benefit to our chronic pain patients. The team perform nerve blocks and steroid injections under sedation or anaesthesia to deliver relief directly to the nerves that transmit the pain.

Common Conditions

Arthritis

The most common types of chronic pain in dogs and cats is arthritis affecting dogs as young as four years of age. Our team uses pain scoring tools coupled with the latest research findings, to evaluate pain and the stage and degree of arthritis. This allows us to tailor the therapy and monitor improvements in the individual patients.

There are many options that we consider for chronic arthritis management, including pain relief, diet, exercise modifications, supplements, complementary therapies, and rehabilitation.

Cancer

Cancer patients will often suffer with pain associated with their disease. We work closely with our team of Oncologists to maintain comfort levels in these patients. Quality of life assessment is key here and we use the Vetmetrica assessment (developed by pain researchers at the University of Glasgow specifically for dogs and cats) tool to assess to identify how pain affects these dogs and cats.

Spinal pain

Another common source of pain in dogs and cats is back pain. Many of our pain clinic referrals have already seen our Neurology team and have a diagnosis. With our multidisciplinary approach to care, we can bring improved comfort to these pets and enable them to live a happier life. Our Pain Specialists use acupuncture in these cases in conjunction with our Veterinary Physiotherapists who use laser therapy.

Dental pain

At Eastcott we are fortunate to work alongside a world-leading Dentistry team. Our pain and dental service work hand in hand to address chronic pain in dogs and cats suffering from dental pain.

Our Pain Management service sees cats and dogs with a wide range of pain conditions including:
