Augusta Back on Top After Eye Ulcer Threatens her Sight

Augusta is a lively French bulldog who was referred to our Ophthalmology team with her eye near to rupturing! She had a large ulcer, which was so deep there was only one layer of cells left before it perforated. This type of ulcer is called a Descemetocele and is a surgical emergency.

Augusta is classed as a brachycephalic dog, meaning her skull is shortened and her airways are narrower than that of other breeds. This means the risks associated with anaesthesia are greater and so her owner was particularly worried. After discussing all the options with Kat Manchip, RCVS Recognised Specialist in Ophthalmology, Augusta was assessed by our Specialist-led Anaesthesia team and her owner choose to proceed with surgery to save the eye. Augusta had a corneal graft, called a corneoconjunctival transposition, which has now healed nicely, and she is back to bossing all the other dogs around.

Augusta’s owner was so happy with the care and treatment provided by our exceptional team that she wanted to share her thanks:

“I would like to raise awareness about the Specialist services Eastcott Referrals provide.

When we got to see Kat I was already very distraught as I could see that Augusta was not improving after 2 weeks of drops and constant visits to our usual vet.

We recently lost Augusta’s mother after a routine op, so I was very reluctant to go for another surgery.

Kat’s calm manner and Specialist knowledge really helped me make the right decision for Augusta. With Kat you feel that you are in safe hands, you trust the skill and caring candour. Kat saved Augusta’s eye; we’ve been extremely lucky that we saw her in time to save the eye. Thank you so much, Kat!”
