Tilly Maydom – Lumbosacral instability
Tilly, a 6-year-old female Labrador Retriever, presented to the neurology department at Eastcott following an acute onset of faecal incontinence, and chronic progressive history of pelvic limbs weakness. He was neurolocalised in the L6-S3 spinal cord segments or nerve roots, and MRI documented changes consistent with a L7-S1 intervertebral disc extrusion lateralized to the left and lumbosacral instability causing bilateral foraminal stenosis. Tilly underwent surgery consisting of an L7–S1 dorsal laminectomy with partial discectomy and vertebral stabilisation using the pedicle screw–rod system. The surgery was a complete success, representing the first case in which this system has been used at Eastcott. A complete resolution of faecal incontinence was observed, along with a marked increase in Tilly’s energy levels, and she has returned to normal exercise.
